Antique Rare Codd Bottle J. Roberts Castleford Codd Patent Glass Marble. Antique Codd Neck Bottle - estimated to be circa 1890s — with a design invented by Hiram Codd in the 1870s as an improved way to store and ship carbonated drinks. A glass marble sits inside the neck opening and seals againt it when held in place by the pressure of a carbonated liquid. It was opened by pushing a wooden bottle peg with enough pressure to break the seal and release the marble with a pop, reportedly as in “soda pop.” The thick glass bottle has a castle logo and writing embossed, and a slightly bluish green tinge to it. The underside is unmarked. Approximate size: 9.5” tall x 2.5" x 2.5". Approximate weight: 0.5 lbs Condition: very good antique condition; cork is partially present; normal dirt, dust, scratches, and wear and tear associated with old bottles and storage of same. No cracks.
