This listing is for one live Beaucarnea recurvata plant, similar in size and appearance to the one pictured in the photo, any pictures of mature specimens are for example only. Latin Names: Beaucarnea recurvata, Nolina recurvata Common Names: Elephant’s Foot, Ponytail Palm, Bottle Palm Category: Evergreen Tree USDA Zones 10-11 Height: 20’-30’ when in the ground (Rarely exceed 10’) Width: 10-15’, caudex at base Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Origin: Mexico Irrigation: Low Water Cold Hardiness: 25 F, can get damaged in low desert freezes if unprotected Bloom Color: Cream to Yellow, after plant is over ten years old Bloom Time: Spring, Summer Notes: Beaucarnea recurvata is not a true palm, but rather an evergreen perennial native to Eastern Mexico. Some specimens in Mexico are registered to be over 350 years old. At their base they have a giant caudex for storing water, allowing this plant to be extremely tolerant of drought and arid conditions. Soil with excellent drainage is essential. It needs low amounts of supplemental water once established. Irrigate by watering deeply and then allowing the top several inches of soil to dry between waterings. This encourages the plant to send roots deep into the earth in search of moisture, helping it to become established, prevent root rot, build drought tolerance, and resilience to heat and cold. The length of time between waterings will vary depending on your growing conditions and environment. Great as a container plant, or even as a houseplant in bright settings, containers limit the plant to much smaller proportions. I have noticed over the years that they tend to do better when slightly root bound than when swimming in a too-large pot. They are very susceptible to overwatering, so make sure they dry thoroughly between waterings, terra cotta pots work well for this. The leaf edges have a very slight serration making them sharp. Only larger mature plants usually flower, and only female plants will produce seed (dioecious). Can branch after flowering or if cut. They don’t pup smaller plants from the base, this plant is only propagated from seed. These plants are sold for the purposes of ornamental cultivation. Any other uses are at the discretion of the buyer. Seller is not responsible for any harm or injury caused by improper handling or ingestion of the plant. Our plants are shipped with considerable personal time, cost, and careful attention so that they will arrive at their destination in good health, intact, and ready to adapt to a new environment. Orders will be processed and shipped within 7 business days. We have heat packs available for purchase with your order if you expect freezing temperatures the week your plant is shipped. The pot or rootball will be specially packed to prevent loss of moisture during the shipping process, but will still need to be unwrapped, and watered-in directly upon arrival to prevent further stress. Use caution when unpacking plants with sharp spines or thorns. Keep in a shady location protected from the sun and wind if not immediately transplanting. Plants can experience some stress during shipping and may experience a few damaged or yellow leaves. However, if the plant has sustained significant damage, please report the damage within seven days of delivery, including photographs of the damaged plant, and we will contact you as soon as possible. We will not accept responsibility for damaged plants once they have been transplanted. I am happy to answer any questions about combined shipping discounts for bulk purchases.
