Catarrh is from an ancient Greek phrase meaning “to
flow down” and is essentially a post-nasal drip, often with mucus in your nose
and sinuses and phlegm in your throat. Hall’s Catarrh Cure was a classic example of a
gullible public being influenced by an avalanche of advertising in the late 1800s. Invented by Dr. Henry S. Hall, the rights to this “cure”
were sold to Frank J. Cheney in the early 1870s. Cheney turned most of his
early profits right back into advertising and by the 1890s he was advertising
in over 16,000 newspapers throughout the world and reportedly mailed out
200,000 circulars every day! He employed salesmen who went door to door in most
states throughout the country and the pitch in person and through the ads was
basic: Beware of ointments for Catarrh that contain mercury (his of course did
not) and Claim a $100 reward for any case of Catarrh that can't be cured with
Hall’s Catarrh Cure. My favorite story is about a man who took 26 bottles
and asked for his reward; the reply was he had not given the product a fair
trial. (thanks to bottlebooks.com) The bottle is 4.5 inches tall, nicely embossed with
HALL’S CATARRH CURE, in near-mint condition, clear, clean, and free of chips or
cracks. As always with vintagepapa, carefully wrapped and
mailed promptly using USPS Priority. Thank you for looking!
