Bound water in oil has no lubrication (stiction, loss of productivity). Dissolved water molecules (polar) actively seek other polar molecules, including metals, additives such as detergents, antioxidants, friction modifiers, and anti-wear additives. Water will come out of suspension and form white gummy masses in various areas of the unit (can not be flushed). Any oil with water exceeding 300 PPM is corrosive leading to rust, hydrolysis, sludge. Emulsified water can cause oil to behave unexpectedly, and can cause clogged filters, and increased oil acidity.
