This cobalt blue vintage atomizer is one of the rarest of the Niki de Saint Phalle perfume series.
Niki de Saint Phalle, 1930-2002, was a French-American sculpture, painter, filmmaker and author of colorful hand-illustrated books.
In 1979 the artist began working on her famous Tarot Garden (Il Giardino dei Tarocchi) located in Tuscany near the town of Capalbio. Inspired by the 22 major arcana of the tarot deck, Saint Phalle's Tarot Garden was to be built on 14 acres, on the site of Etruscan ruins, featuring monumental sculptures based upon this ancient divination technique. With the help of Carlo Biotti, then president of Jacqueline Cochran Cosmetics, Niki de Saint Phalle created a perfume and designed distinctive bottles like this one to raise seed money for Il Giardino dei Tarocchi.
From the studio of Niki De Saint Phalle comes the first fragrance conceived as a work of art. This cobalt blue, hand painted sculptured bottle with the colorful enameled serpents is one of her earliest designs for her perfume. The bottle is signed in gold on the back. This 4 ounce bottle stands 5-1/4" tall x 3-1/2" wide x 1" deep (13.3 x 8.9 x 2.5 cm). For those who love her hard-to-find refreshing, woodsy frangance, there is about 1/3 of the eau de perfum remaining in this atomizer.
This atomizer is in very good vintage condition. The rope, atomizer bulb, and tassel are all in excellent condition. The colors of the glass and enamel are still brilliant, There are signs of aging on the metal cap and some light marks om blue glass to right of snakes, which I photographed close up under bright lights. I will pack very carefully and double box this item so it arrives safely to you.
Saint Phalle’s work belongs in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Museum Ludwig, the Stedelik Museum, the Tate the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. In 2021, MOMA PS1, mounted a major Saint Phalle retrospective. The artist’s work has sold for seven figures at auction.
