I am delighted to offer this unusual and
historically significant pairing of two iconic seltzer bottles from Boston,
Mass. Both are from a venerable Boston seltzer distributor that dates backto more than a century ago. The first example
has a pedestal design manufactured in
Bohemia, Austria in a region later known as Czechoslavakia, when it was part of
the Austrian-Hungarian Empire which predates WW I. It says Pureoxia.It is paired with a later version of
the Pureoxia company from probably the 1930’s when this company also bottled
The Moxie brand of soda/seltzer.Moxie itself is one of the oldest brands of carbonated beverages,
created somewhere around 1876 by Augustin Thompson in Lowell, Massachusetts. In
that era, it was known as “Moxie Nerve Food” probably as recognition of its
stimulating effects. It was a sweet soda, somewhat akin to root beer, but with
a somewhat more bitter aftertaste.Pureoxia must have bottled this popular
formula in a mutually beneficial relationship with the major soft drink
company, in this type of syphon bottle, as did many other soft drink companies like Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper etc.
did several generations ago. This is an awesome pairing, offered at a very modest price, that
combines two historic bottles with separate yet unifying connections, that
encapsulate and memorialize a distant yet inspiring time in the American
