Rare BIXBY translucent PURPLE color CONE INK well antique BLOWN GLASS

A 2 3/4 inch tall x 2 3/8 inch round beautiful TRANSLUCENT PURPLE colored antique CONE INK well .  This one stands out nicely as in LARGE LETTERS it is embossed BIXBY on the base.   These CONE INK bottles were made in this shape so they would not easily tip over. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand B lown I nto M old bottle ( BIM ) with a tooled top, dating it all the way back to the 1800's . Base of bottle embossed :  " B I X B Y ". Condition :  This is a nice looking antique cone ink well.  It has just some traces of content haze but there isn't anything specifically wrong with it .   NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. Please see pictures for overall appearance of bottle . Age :  An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled-top, ca. late 1800's . Bixby used various styles of bottles for packaging ink in, including this collector's favorite 'CONE' shaped ink well.  They also were in the shoe polish market and you can see why as both products were very similar.  As a matter of fact, one time we discovered a large cache of old shoe polish bottles behind a long gone barber shop, mixed in with hair coloring and whisker dye bottles, evidence that the barber was using the shoe polish for coloring and dying hair!   So whether this really is an ink bottle or a shoe polishing bottle, we are not sure.  One thing we are sure of though is that you don't see many of these BIXBY embossed bottles, this is RARE CONE INK bottle.   A purple example like this one really sets off a string of colored cone inks and greatly compliments a whole line up of ink wells.   A super ni ce looking antique ink well in form and color .   The form, the cone shape, was a great design to prevent these bottles from tipping over.  In this design, when pushed, it will slide over before it will tip over, brilliant design.  And then the color, the pure purple color.   We've all heard about old glass turning purple in the sunlight ... this beautiful purple amethyst color is the result of  this bottle being made with manganese-glass.  Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass.   But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color.    This bottle was run through an industrial food sterilizer, a safe and permanent process that enriches the purple color that would naturally occur if exposed to sun light for a prolonged period of time. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst.
